Dealing with Bullying | Season 3 Episode 6
Empowering Kids to Stand Up to Bullies: A Parent/Teacher Toolkit
Welcome back to the Educational Currency Podcast! In this episode, we're diving into a crucial topic that affects students, parents, and teachers alike: bullying. We'll explore what bullying is, how it manifests, and, most importantly, provide a comprehensive guide for parents, teachers, and students on how to address and prevent it.
Chris and Rob's key insights are:
Bullying is defined as a repeated and deliberate behaviour targeting an individual, often involving a power imbalance and potentially group dynamics that lead to social exclusion. It manifests in various forms, including physical, verbal, social/relational actions, and cyberbullying, which can occur at any time due to technology.
To support a child who is being bullied, parents should maintain open communication, diligently document any incidents, and involve the school, and potentially the police, as necessary. It's also crucial to build the child's self-confidence, seek external support to teach coping mechanisms, closely monitor their online activities with resources like the eSafety Commissioner, encourage social connections, and remain actively involved in the situation.
When a child is identified as engaging in bullying behaviour, parents should first remain calm and approach the situation with an open mind, initiating an honest conversation to understand if there are underlying issues. It's important to acknowledge the behaviour, collaborate with the school, actively teach empathy and respect, establish clear consequences, and consider the necessary steps to take after the bullying has occurred.
